Watershed Gallery – Background Information
The Muskoka Watershed stretches 120 km from the Algonquin Highlands to Georgian Bay. It is 62 km at its widest point and encompasses 4,660 square kilometers. For 5,000 years First Nations inhabited the watershed. Non-indigenous peoples settled in the region in the mid-1800s.
The waterways provided life-sustaining water for wildlife and humans alike. The watershed powered the local economy: While the timber mills and boat works produced commodities, water-based tourism grew, eventually becoming the sustaining industry of the region.
The Watershed Gallery at the Muskoka Discovery Centre
It is imperative that we understand the need for stewardship of the watershed and how we, as individuals, can contribute to its conservation and preservation. To that end, the Watershed Gallery at the Muskoka Discovery Centre will be a unique experience of discovery, teaching through interactive exhibits:
- What a watershed is
- The watershed’s key physical and biological elements
- How it works
- How it shapes the lives of visitors and residents.
Built in 2006, the Muskoka Discovery Centre has evolved from a boat and heritage museum to what Muskoka teachers have called a beacon of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) education for the entire community. The Watershed Gallery, opening July 2018, is the next generation in that evolution.
